[BillingsLUG] Seeking advice for a "media center" project

Greetings,

I have a friend (that I go eat pizza for lunch with every Wednesday) who is wanting to setup a media center at home.  He isn't yet a Linux user.  I'm pretty low tech at home... have only standard def TV and have been using a TiVo for about 10 years now... so I'm pretty ignorant on the subject.

He (Pat) is going to only have broadcast TV for input and would like to view his video collection and online video sources... but realizes that some may require a video conversion step.

There are just so many options out there.  Media appliances, Roku, MythTV, etc. What are people using and what are they happy with?  What recommendations do you have?
